| CHINA
THROUGH THE LOOKING GLASS
is a unique series of travel guides that brings thoughtful
analysis and fresh perspectives to favourite Chinese destinations
– as well as lesser-known cities featuring new handpicked
surprises for visitors to China.
The series invites accomplished
authors to uncover each location and arranges for an open-arms
research policy with dedicated support at the level of
Chinese local government, allowing respected authors in
the series to go deeper and take greater advantage of
informed local knowledge than most foreign-language China
guides are able to do. |

Sichuan Earthquake-12 May 2008
Beijing - 17 May 2008, Just two weeks after the public book launch of Dujiangyan: in harmony with nature and the publication of Sichuan: the spice of life, a cruel twist of fate has left the entire area north of Chengdu devastated. Local tourist board officialswho were eagerly anticipating the passing ofthe Olympic torch next month, and enjoying the fruits of hard l abour in bringing the transportation andtourist infrastructure in
Dujiangyan and Qingchengshan up to international standards, have been diverted to the immediate task of caring for fragmented families, and constructing makeshift homes for
thousands. Dujiangyan tourist board director Chen Guangjian today told Myra Quan, “People
are still trapped under the buildings and asking for help, but we cannot get them out!”
Taking a longer term perspective, wounds from this earthquake will take generations to
heal. This calamity shows that no matter how harmoniously we attempt to live with our surroundings, nature will always have the last word. |

We urge all those who have not yet done so to contribute to the Red Cross campaignsupporting those who lost all in the course of a few minutes on Monday 12 May.
A historical city which was, for the most part, unknown abroad has now had global headline coverage for a week. Most international visitors stranded in buses and nature reserves in the area have been accounted for, and fortunately none of those who won free trips to Dujiangyan at the book launch had left for the region. Travel, the art of exploring unknown territory, both past and present, will be taboo in Dujiangyan for some time to come. But when it becomes time to wander again, Dujiangyan will pull through as a place of contemplative people, deep history, and overawing nature.
We hope that by remembering Dujiangyan and including it in our thoughts and plans, we can help the local people keep going, by in some small way distracting them from their community’s million and one individual tragedies. Therefore, in the years ahead, we pledge to work with the local authorities to renew Dujiangyan’s capacity to welcome outsiders, just as the city had been doing with panache only weeks ago.
Whether fundraising for infrastructure rebuilding, fostering and teaching the surviving children, ensuring the wellbeing of wildlife, or enabling Daoist and Buddhist teaching to emanate from the mountains, Matric Publishing will continue to act as a medium for international understanding of this until recently lesser known Chinese region.
